8th July – IAO in Expo Milan 2015: The Durum Wheat Value Chain in Ethiopia

On the occasion of Expo Milan 2015, the Directorate General for Development Cooperation (DGCS) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), in partnership with the Overseas Agronomic Institute of Florence (IAO), presents the development project on Agricultural Value Chains in Oromia as a best practice of the collaboration among Italy and Ethiopia. The project is implemented in the framework of the “Growth and Transformation Plan 2010-15”, aimed at the fast industrialization of Ethiopia, with the goal of fulfilling the growing demand of food products (both in quantity and quality) and the improvement of national balance of payment.

The workshop, by focusing on the Durum wheat value chain for high quality pasta, intends to: stress the small farmers’ cooperatives capacities to implement the technological, productive, commercial and managerial leap to become reliable partners of agro-processing companies; illustrate the key role of technical and scientific knowledge for sustainable development processes in economic, social and environmental terms; and, finally, promote Ethiopia as a magnet for public and private investment for developing value chains on food commodities.
