Master's Degree on
Geomatics and Natural Resources Evaluation
Presentation
Adequate knowledge of available
natural resources is a basic step prior to any rural development initiative.
Problems very often arise in developing countries from a lack or inadequacy
of knowledge on the local environment. Within
this framework, the Istituto Agronomico per l'Oltremare has organized
regularly since 1974 a Post-graduate Course on Geomatics and Natural Resources
Evaluation, to provide participants from different academic backgrounds
with a common grounding in Geomatics as management tool for assessing
and inventoring natural resources, with special emphasis on rural areas
in developing countries.
Specific objectives of the Course are to:
- train in
Remote sensing data interpretation and accurate field data
collection;
- demonstrate
the setup and use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
for natural resources evaluation.
"Geomatics"
is a scientific term referring to the integrated approach
of collection, analysis, and management of Earth-based data.
Such data can come from many sources, including earth observation
satellites, air-borne sensors and ground observations. They
are processed and manipulated with state-of-the-art information
technology using computer software and hardware. In this context,
Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
are outstanding data collection and management tools, provided
that operational interpretation methodologies are at hand.
The IAO methodology is based upon a
pragmatic and interdisciplinary utilisation of field survey
and Remote Sensing techniques, both aerial photographs and
satellite imagery, in varying proportions according to the
scale of the study.
A short history
Training in the sector of Remote Sensing
has taken place at IAO since 1974 (two years later the first
launch of a Landsat satellite), when the first Post-graduate
Course, named "Aerophotogrammetry and Photointerpretation
for the Management of Terrestrial Resources", was started.
According to the scientific and technological development
characterizing this sector, several didactic changes were
made to the Course, which was renamed "Remote Sensing
and Natural Resource Evaluation" in 1987.Another important
step was the GIS introduction, which found in its synergy
with the Remote Sensing one of the most interesting aspects.
For this reason, since the 22nd edition, the Course name has
been changed again to "Geomatics and Natural Resource
Evaluation". From the 28th edition, the Course awards a Master's Degree in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Florence.
